Morihei Ueshiba envisioned a style that could be both non-aggressive and still effective in a multitude of self-defense situations. From that vision came the art of aikido. As a student, you will be taught to respect the body of your opponent. The techniques should never cause permanent damage. The pain you inflict will be momentary. The aikido student is taught to search for eternal harmony. But this training has no end, for aikidoists believe perfection of character is never complete.

...for the martial artist Aikido The Japanese word Aikido is written in three characters: Ai (harmony), Ki (spirit or energy), Do (the path or way). Roughly translated Aikido means "the way of the spirit of harmony. The way of harmony with the universe." What is Aikido? Aikido is a true budo, or Martial Way that evolved in the historic tradition of Japanese warrior arts. Aikido often described as "moving Zen", is a martial art that focuses on effectiveness against attack as well as harmony of spirit and is sometimes called the "gentle martial art." Aikido is known for its graceful techniques and swift effortless movements that fling an attacker through the air or immobilize and control him with subtle pressure applied as joint locks. Aikido movements are greatly influenced by the sword, stick and spear. The techniques are very fluid circular movements that blend and harmonize with the attack rather than confronting it thus turning an aggressive linear attach into a circular motion that renders attackers helpless. The aim of Aikido is not to harm an attacker, but to blend with and capture an opponent's aggressive actions and neutralize them. Properly executed, Aikido techniques convince an attacker that violence will not work. Studied in earnest, Aikido is more than a science of tactics and self-defense: it is a discipline for perfecting the spirit. The basics are only a guiding principle. Your strongest posture is the one that fits your constitution. That cannot be taught to you, you have to find it for yourself. It is not a question of widening your stance or narrowing it, if the truth be told. But, people will do what is comfortable for them, so if you allow them to, they will just make it up for themselves. That is why, you must always return to the basics. This is what is important.-Gozo ShiodaAikido students and enthusiasts the world over will be delighted with this English translation of Gozo Shioda's "hidden principles, " finally made available by the Yoshinkan school of aikido. In this sequel to Dynamic Aikido, the preeminent master continues his explanation of the essential principles but in finer detail. Comprehensive and fully illustrated, Total Aikido covers the basic postures and movements with special emphasis on certain key points for perfecting one's technique to achieve maximum effect with the minimum of effort. Demonstrations are provided in a dojo setting, with helpful pointers for avoiding common mistakes. Mary Stein took up aikido in her mid-fifties and quickly learned what it really means to face danger both external and internal. In this powerful collection of short essays, she vividly describes learning an active and spirited defense on the mat, in the process uncovering a lifetime of habitual tensions and emotional reactions, of flight and ineffective fight. Stein s thoughtful musings make clear how the practice of aikido can show what is really needed, right now. The Gift of Danger is aimed at men and women for whom the question of what is genuine in their lives has taken on fresh urgency. Above all, Stein shows that a sense of danger has extraordinary importance for the martial artist; when danger is present during training, one learns to test limits and respond quickly and accurately. We follow the author as she stands, tentative but determined, on the razor s edge between knowing and not knowing, judgment and impartiality the only place where real growth can occur. The Gift of Danger is both a striking story of personal growth and a potent argument for aikido as a model for human behavior.
